NASCAR FANATICS

When I first moved to Atlanta, I attended the Nascar Sprint Cup Series stock car race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. With my interest in everyday Americana, I wanted to experience the culture of Nascar in the South.

I approached this assignment from a stylized, documentary viewpoint to make images focused on the authenticity of the moment. The drunken, exuberant, barbecued zaniness I encountered and photographed away from the racing was a new experience for me. There was so much action in the infield that the race barely caught my attention.

Welcome to the South!
